There’s nothing quite like the chance to catch up with current homeowners who partnered with us in years past to build the house they now live in! Having built one’s own home is an accomplishment unlike any other, and takes a dedicated person who is willing to put in the hard work and overcome any obstacles along the way. Julia Vincent is one such Habitat homeowner who participated in building her home and those of her neighbors from 2018 to 2019 as part of the Twilight homebuild. She was generous enough to follow-up with us to let us know how she’s doing since she and her son moved in two years ago. Here’s what she had to say:
What was it like working and building with Helena Habitat?
“It was really nice that Habitat took care of contacting contractors, arranging inspections, handled all the paperwork, and any other details. The employees, staff and volunteers were wonderful to work with.”
What was the most rewarding thing about the experience?
“Being able to say that I helped build my house and other houses.”
What was the most difficult part of the experience?
“The most difficult part of the experience was the physical labor. Working on the houses in addition to going to a job every day got very tiring.”
How is your life different now from when you first moved in?
“For one thing, I was in better shape when I was on the construction site twice a week. I’ve gotten soft since then. A big difference is that I now have a nice home to invite friends over.”
How has homeownership impacted your life?
“I’m no longer living in old, run down rental trailers. I’m living in a brand new, well-built house. This has had a positive effect on my health, wellbeing, and self-esteem. My monthly payments are going into my own home.”
What is something you did not expect about homeownership?
“I can’t think of anything unexpected that has come up.”
What advice would you give to someone considering partnering with Helena Habitat as a future homeowner?
“Keep your credit good, be prepared to work hard and get tired, but keep going.”
Is there anything else you would like to add?
“I am so very appreciative to everyone who worked together to make it possible for me to own my own, brand new house: board members, selection committee, employees, staff, volunteers, other partner families, the contractors who donated time and materials, companies and businesses who donated products, Mark Runkle and Rebecca Ryland for making it possible for Helena Habitat to build homes for twelve families in the Mountain View Meadows subdivision, and all those who support the work of Habitat for Humanity.”
